Yogurt and Yeast Infections
Is there an interesting relationship between yogurt and yeast infections? Well, the answer is maybe! There is still a lot of research being done on something called probiotics, otherwise known as good bacteria. Usually bacteria is such a bad word, but there is actually good bacteria living in your body, and you need it! These good bacteria actually help to fight off the disease.
Where can you find this good bacteria? - Yogurt
- Acidophilus milk
- Kefir
So what’s the link between yogurt and yeast infections?
Well, it’s possible that the good bacteria may help to prevent (not treat) vaginal infections. The jury is still out, but it may be worth eating a daily serving if you are prone to yeast infections, especially if you have frequent yeast infection in pregnancy!
Does it matter what kind of yogurt?
Yes, be sure it says that it contains live and active cultures on the container. Also, try to stick to the nonfat or low fat yogurts, preferably without all of the added fruit.
What is one serving?
One cup is one serving of yogurt.
Are there any other benefits of probiotics
Again, research is still needed to come to any conclusions, but probiotics may also help to prevent urinary tract infections or eczema in children and treat diarrhea, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), shorten how long an intestinal infection called Clostridium difficile lasts, and reduce recurrence of bladder cancer.
So should you eat the yogurt?
It can’t hurt! Even if it does not prevent you from getting a yeast infection, you will be eating a healthy food that is a good source of calcium. Practicing good nutrition during pregnancy can save you from having extra doctors visits and help you feel better
