Yeast infection cures come in various forms, from over-the-counter to prescription. Treatment types for vaginal yeast infections include antifungal creams, suppositories, and oral anti-fungals.

You should discuss with you doctor which treatment form is best for you, especially for yeast infection in pregnancy.




Types of over-the-counter medications for treating yeast infections:
  • miconazole (Monistat)

  • clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin)

  • butoconazole

  • nystatin

  • tioconazole

  • terconazole (Terazol 3)

Benefits of over-the-counter medications include:

  • Less expensive

  • Do not have to wait for prescription from doctor

Drawbacks of over-the-counter medications:

  • They are not as easy to use

  • They are not always effective in treating yeast infections because of over-use

  • Without proper diagnosis, you may be mistakenly treating a yeast infection when it is actually another infection


Prescription medication:
  • flucanazole (Diflucan)

Benefits of prescription medication:

  • Easier to administer

  • Is a one-pill treatment
  • May be more effective in treating infection

  • Requires a prescription, meaning that doctor has diagnosed yeast infection

Drawbacks of prescription medication:

  • More expensive

  • Requires waiting for prescription from doctor

If you try an over-the-counter medication and symptoms persist or if you have never had a vaginal infection before, you should definitely consult your doctor.



You may have heard of examples of a natural remedy for yeast infection. Sufficient studies have not been done to prove that they are safe or effective.

It is probably better to speak with your doctor about treatment and then take measures to prevent a yeast infection in the future.

Yeast infection in pregnancy is not fun! Do things that prevent yeast infection so that you do not have to waste your time and money on yeast infection cures.
