Constipation Relief During Pregnancy:

The Fiber Supplement Way

If you need constipation relief during pregnancy, the first thing you probably want to know is “what is safe for my baby and will also help me to feel better?”

If you have already tried to eat the right foods, get adequate physical activity, and drink plenty of water, your health care provider may suggest that you try an over-the-counter fiber supplement.

Fiber supplements have not been shown to be dangerous to use during pregnancy, and may prevent you from having to use other medications.

What are over-the-counter fiber supplements?

It is basically the soluble fiber found in plants, which your body does not digest.

If your body doesn’t digest it, why does it help?

It actually helps because your body doesn’t digest it! The soluble fiber helps the food move through your intestine by absorbing water and creating a softer bowel movement.

Are there different types?

Yes, and the two main types are methylcellulose (Metamucil) and psyllium husk (Citrucel). Guar gum is another type, found in Benefiber.

Are there any guidelines for taking these fiber supplements?

Yes, first and foremost it is important to discuss with your healthcare provider first. Also, it is very important to drink plenty of water with these supplements. The fiber will not help the problem without adequate water!

Since mineral oil is “natural” is it as safe to use than the fiber supplements?

No! Do not use mineral oil during pregnancy to relieve constipation, because it may interfere with the absorption of important nutrients that you and your baby need.

If fiber supplements do not work, what can I do?

You should talk to your healthcare provider before doing anything else, especially taking laxatives.

Nutrition during pregnancy, including adequate fiber in your diet and possibly a fiber supplement can provide constipation relief during pregnancy!
