Constipation in pregnancy is one of those subjects that we don’t want to talk about…but is a common thread throughout almost every pregnancy.

Those who have experienced it (or are experiencing it) know why it’s so bad – because you’re already so uncomfortable and feel "bloated". Constipation is one of the last things you want when you already feel that way.




Why do you get constipation during pregnancy?

Unfortunately, all of the extra iron you need in those prenatal vitamins are one of the reasons you are constipated. Also, your digestive tract is slower due to the change in hormone levels. These are reasons that you may experience constipation in early pregnancy.

If you are experiencing constipation at the end of your pregnancy, it could also be due to pressure from the growing baby.




Is there anything I can do to help with constipation in pregnancy?

While you can’t stop taking your prenatal vitamin, but if you take an iron supplement, speak with your physician about changing your dosage.

Also, you can make some changes in your diet to help alleviate constipation during pregnancy.

Exercise during pregnancy can help with digestion as well. This is especially helpful for those suffering from constipation in early pregnancy, because it may not be too late to add a little bit of extra exercise, whereas it may not be possible later in pregnancy.

It is important to speak with your healthcare provider prior to beginning any exercise during pregnancy, to assure that you and baby stay safe.

Your physician may also prescribe fiber supplements for you if the other lifestyle changes are not sufficient.


What should I not do to treat constipation during pregnancy?

A mild stool softener may be a safe way to treat it if your physician recommends it, but a laxative should be avoided unless otherwise prescribed by healthcare provider.

Do not use mineral oil to treat pregnancy constipation, as this can interfere with absorption of nutrients.
