Caffeine During Pregnancy



If you love coffee, you are probably wondering whether caffeine during pregnancy is safe. Before you reach for your afternoon java, know the facts!



As with most things in life, if done to an extreme, it can be harmful. High caffeine intakes during pregnancy have been associated with spontaneous miscarriage and low-birthweight babies. Interestingly, high intake of caffeine has also been associated with delayed contraception. Good nutrition during pregnancy is vitally important for you and the baby.

So, where should you draw the line between “high” intake and a safe amount? The position of the American Dietetic Association is that you should not exceed 300 mg of caffeine per day during pregnancy. One study showed that there was not a difference in outcomes between people who have around 300 mg per day and just over 100 mg per day.

Since most of us do not drink our coffee based on milligrams, but rather on the size cup, it may be helpful to know how this translates to your everyday drinking. Brewed coffee usually ranges between 143 to 259 mg per 16 oz. However, they can vary 564 mg per 16 oz. If you are ordering a darker roast coffee from a shop, you will more likely have higher caffeine content than your regular brew at home.

Keep in mind that coffee is not the only source of caffeine. Teas, particularly black tea, can have as much as 120 mg in 8 oz. Your average iced teas are not nearly as high in caffeine, but if you guzzle them all day, you will be having a significant amount of caffeine.

Sodas are also a source of caffeine, usually ranging somewhere between 35 and 55 mg in 12 oz. Remember that diet sodas have caffeine too! The popular energy drinks are often loaded with caffeine and other ingredients that may not be safe during pregnancy, so I personally recommend limited or eliminating those.

Only you can decide if you want to completely eliminate caffeine during pregnancy. Some expectant mothers do choose to do so because of the possibility of harmful effects on the baby, but many mothers also decide to have caffeine in moderation. Based on current evidence, it seems safe to have a morning cup of coffee in moderation.

Whether you decide to have a small amount of caffeine during pregnancy or not, remember that it is important to focus on having a healthy pregnancy diet so that you can have the best pregnancy possible!
